Nothing to See Here: Watts – Michael Soenen

IndieFEST Film Awards Film Festival Oscar winners to Hot new talent
Michael Soenen (USA)
, Nothing to See Here: Watts, Documentary Feature – In Watts, a neighborhood long marked by violence and systemic neglect, a single ride-along revealed how much of the community’s reality goes unseen. Inspired to understand the neighborhood from the perspective of those who live there, Michael Soenen provided local residents—gang members, police officers, students, victims, and activists—with iPhones and invited them to film their own lives.

As the footage came in, he shifted from director to facilitator, giving participants the tools and support to become the filmmakers themselves. Backed by Oscar-nominee Todd Lieberman and Emmy-winner Suzanne Malveaux, the project unfolded over three years. Made without scripts, narration, or a director, this raw, unfiltered portrait is the ultimate indie filmmaking spirit: fearless, self-made, and unapologetically real. Through the community’s voices, images, and music, it shows how, when those most overlooked are trusted to tell their own stories, they can transform both perception and reality. Screenings with top gang leaders and community conversations sparked dialogue and inspired actions that significantly reduced violence, showing how the film itself became a force for change.

They Fight with Cameras – Nina Rosenblum and Daniel Allentuck

IndieFEST Film Awards Film Festival Oscar winners to Hot new talent
Nina Rosenblum
and Daniel Allentuck (USA), They Fight with Cameras, Doc Feature – Oscar-nominated Rosenblum and Allentuck deliver a pitch-perfect documentary narrated by Emmy-nominee Liev Schreiber, honoring one of World War II’s most decorated combat cameramen, Walter Rosenblum. By combining his photographs and motion-picture footage with his Reports and letters to his first wife, they provide a compelling, deeply personal account of Rosenblum’s camera work, capturing intense combat and moments of tenderness.

Rosenblum recorded many of the war’s most famous battles and, on April 29, 1945, was among the first Americans to witness the horrors of liberating Dachau. Unlike conventional WWII documentaries, this film offers an eyewitness perspective of the war in Europe through the eyes of a soldier/cameraman driven by empathy. This is not a film that glorifies war; it is a stark reminder of its horrific human consequences—and a call for peace. Walter Rosenblum and the soldier-cameramen who served alongside him truly “fought with cameras” to make that message heard.
